HFMA MA-RI New to Healthcare Conference Recap

By | November 10, 2022

Wow! We had a fantastic turnout at our Chapter’s New to Healthcare Conference on October 28th! We received lots of positive feedback from our attendees letting us know that the conference was informative and engaging. This was our first hybrid event and the technology was seamless thanks to expertise from our host, Mass General Brigham at Assembly Row. I’d like to offer a big thank you to the planning committee and to our speakers who brought great content to the conference. And of course, a big thank you to our enthusiastic audience.

Karen Kinsella, Senior Vice President, Bank of America, and HFMA MA-RI Chapter President, kicked off the conference with the President’s Welcome and debuted the Chapter’s Membership Video. Karen invited attendees to ask lots of questions as a way to learn from our expert slate of speakers.

The first session of the day was structured as a lively Question and Answer session on Managed Care. AnnMarie Martinez, Vice President, Baystate Health, shared her expertise and shared a bit about her lived experience that fostered her passion for equity in healthcare. The session had high energy and afterward, two early careerists asked, “How did you do that? It was so much fun!”

After a networking break, during which attendees were invited to have fun playing corn hole and sharing a mid-morning snack and conversation, the conference resumed with Allison Dolan’s presentation on Financial Statements in Health Care. Allison’s presentation was packed with rich content. Even folks experienced in healthcare finance picked up something new. The presentation sparked lively Q&A.

Next on the agenda was Scott Ramer, PwC with an Overview of Revenue Cycle. The presentation was chock-full of great information along with a helpful visual slide presentation.  Scott presented remotely, and we shared a light moment from his home office setting. Energetic Q&A followed the presentation.

The mid-day break featured box lunches, networking, sparkling conversation and more fun and games. After lunch, Donna Schneider, Dhara Sajita, and Tim Hogan participated in a Compliance Roundtable. The panelists shared their expertise in a conversational presentation on healthcare compliance. The panel fielded questions in a vibrant Q&A.

The last session of the day was a Career Spotlight, moderated by Jenny Davies, FHFMA. The career spotlight featured a diverse group of panelists: AnnMarie Martinez, Tasha Hogeboom, Karen Kinsella and Tim Hogan. The panelists represented a wide array of career paths within healthcare finance – managed care, revenue cycle, banking and compliance respectively. Our audience was captivated by the session. We started with lighter moments and learned a bit about each person’s special interests and talents, and they shared what they do to relax, refresh and renew. Each panelist shared an early experience in their career and told how they grew in their career, and shared stories about mentors who helped along the way. A bit of career advice was shared with the audience, too.

At the conclusion of the conference, door prizes for three lucky winners were drawn for the corn hole sets. A post conference networking event was held at Lucky Strike at Assembly Row. Attendees were able to gather together for conversation about the day’s events and connected in a relaxed atmosphere.
