Michael Carson is President and Chief Executive Officer of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, a leading
not‐for‐profit health services company. Harvard Pilgrim and its family of companies provide
health benefit plans, programs and services to more than 3 million members across New England
and nationally. He leads an organization of over 1,600 employees who are committed to
improving the health and well‐being of its members and the community.
A seasoned health care executive, Michael joined Harvard Pilgrim in 2017 as Chief Business Growth & Operating Officer. He is passionate about transforming health care and making it more affordable, accessible and efficient for consumers by connecting often disparate health services and care delivery through strategic collaborations and leading‐edge technology. Additionally, he is committed to using innovative approaches to improve member health and wellness including the utilization of an industry leading population health model that focuses on “whole person” care, best‐in‐class analytics with data‐driven decisions that improve both individual and community outcomes and empowering members to be fully involved in their health care decision‐making by providing advanced health care consumerism products and tools.
Prior to joining Harvard Pilgrim, Michael held several senior leadership positions in the health
care industry including Chief Operating Officer at ConcertoHealth a multi-state, full risk provider
and care management organization, President of Anthem’s Eastern Region Medicare business,
Chief Operating Officer & National Vice President of Medicare at Amerigroup and Vice President
of Operations at Premera Blue Cross in Washington.
Michael chairs the board of the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, which helps build
healthy communities by supporting programs that provide access to fresh, healthy food, and
supports Harvard Pilgrim employees as they invest their time and talents across the region.
Additionally, he sits on the boards of the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans (MAHP),
America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) and the Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP), the
Schwartz Center for Compassionate Care and the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.
Michael studied at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and the University of Maryland
and holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix. He is a
U.S. Air Force veteran.
